The best way to learn Portuguese: fast, fun, immersion.
As a sovereign island in the Atlantic, Cape Verde is the best, safest, and cheapest place to both see Africa and learn Portuguese. Students can achieve proficiency faster than in American classrooms by combining intensive daily classes with practice on the island.
Why Do It?
- Most immersion. While college students can take years of class without much progress in language fluency, Aprende Portuguese provides a natural setting for students to immerse in daily interactions with teachers, shop owners, taxi drivers, and locals. Studies show that surrounding yourself with an environment like this of fluent, native speakers leads to learning 3X faster.
- Best language class. Other study abroad programs pay lip service to language instruction with 5 hours/week (or less) of classroom time dedicated to learning a local language. But Aprende Portuguese Fellows get 10+ hours/week of instruction from an expert teacher, as well as small group practice and scheduled group excursions conducted in Portuguese.
- Unique environment. You can always learn Portuguese in Brazil or Portugal, but neither of those places can combine the safety, affordability, and year-round warm-climate beaches that Cape Verde offers. Aprende Portuguese Fellows get all of these benefits together and provide the highest possible reviews of their experience on the island.
HOUSING & MEALS
Housing is provided for students and accommodation varies based on availability. Fellows should expect to share a double-room with another student of the same gender while abroad. Specific details about your housing location will be available approximately a month before your program start date.
A light breakfast of locally available food is provided by Pure Study Abroad every day of the week, as well as two group dinners at restaurants each week and more meals during group excursions. For most lunches, students buy and prepare their own food or stop by a local cafe. We cannot accommodate special dietary needs for group meals, and remember: in general special diets are more difficult to follow overseas.
TRANSPORTATION & EXCURSIONS
Pure Study Abroad provides transportation for certain aspects of the program, including daily transport to and from the classroom and to off-site excursions that are mandatory Pure Study Abroad group events. Fellows are free to plan personal travel on weekends, which our program fee does not cover.
One of the best things about traveling is experiencing international cuisine, immersing yourself in local culture, and exploring the breath-taking natural beauty of islands. Pure Study Abroad incorporates all of these things into the program schedule. Depending on your program dates, excursions may include hiking, beach trips, attending festivals, visiting historical sites, national parks, and more!
